This scene is played out every day on the campus of Beijing Institute of Technology。The figure of the old man has "maxed out" the circle of friends of the teachers and students of North Li。The teacher who accompanies the students to study every day is the 84-year-old professor Zhang Zhonglian, founder of the photoelectric Innovation Education Experimental Base of Beijing Institute of Technology。
From Qingsi to Huafa, he grew up in the campus of Beitech, taught here and cultivated people, and deeply cultivated the education cause of first-class talents. So far, he has been accompanied by Beitech for 63 years。
In the 63 years of Beijing Institute of Technology, Zhang Zhonglian's choice of life direction is related to the words "national needs"。
In March 1952, the former Ministry of Heavy Industry of the Central People's Government issued a document to adjust the educational direction of Beijing Institute of Technology (the predecessor of Beijing Institute of Technology) to serve the construction of national defense industry. Since then, Beijing Institute of Technology began the journey of building the first national defense industry college in New China。
In 1956, 21-year-old Zhang Zhonglian was admitted to the tank manufacturing major of Beijing Institute of Technology from Xiong Yue High School in Yingkou, Liaoning province。In this institution of higher learning, which trains "red defense engineers", Zhang Zhonglian started his college career。Soon after entering the school, according to the needs of national defense construction, he and more than 200 other students transferred to the radio department radar major。
In April 1960, Zhang Zhonglian graduated early and stayed at the school to teach。He took rocket instrumentation and sensors as the direction of teaching and research, and was responsible for the construction of related laboratories。However, in September 1962, he once again changed the direction of scientific research due to the needs of the country, and began to study night vision technology and photoelectric imaging technology。From tanks to radios, from rocket instruments to night vision technology, Zhang Zhonglian said: "As a northern Li worker, the needs of the country, the needs of the Party is my choice.。”
After nearly 40 years of dedicated work, Chang Zhonglian, transformed by the needs of the country, retired in 1995, and a new journey began。
Ten years before Zhang retired, the Beijing Institute of Technology began to implement teaching reforms to improve students' practical skills。According to the requirements of the school, Zhang Zhonglian opened the compulsory course "Experimental Technology of Instrumentation Electronics" for the whole department, "this course should be regarded as the predecessor of the later photoelectric innovation education experimental base".。
In 2000, the Beijing Institute of Technology granted a special grant of 150,000 yuan to support Zhang Zhonglian to establish the "photoelectric Innovation Education Experimental Base", hoping to build a new model of practical education that trains students' practical innovation ability and improves students' scientific quality across majors。
After several years of accumulation and construction, under the leadership of Zhang Zhonglian, the experimental base quickly played a supporting role in talent training。"While establishing the best knowledge structure, guide students to gradually establish the best intelligence structure, and lay a good foundation for practical ability through experimental electives in the early stage of undergraduate study;In the later stage, through the two very important teaching links of graduation practice and graduation project, we can comprehensively apply the knowledge we have learned to solve practical problems。Zhang Zhonglian has also established a set of teaching models to guide students to innovate and cultivate。

In 2016, a "news feature" with only 531 words, titled "In the Beijing Institute of Technology, there is a light called" 4002 at 11:00 in the night ", was published on the Beijing Institute of Technology News network, and it was clicked more than 10,000 times in a short time。It created a brand new vocabulary for BEIT -- "4002 lights".。
